Position Summary
The Floor Assistant maintains the organization, cleanliness, condition, and stocking of walk-in freezers, floor freezers, coolers, and floor inventory. The position supports receiving and stocking deliveries, food safety, inventory rotation, customer service, cart retrieval, closing procedures, and other daily store operations.
Work Environment
Floor Assistants work primarily on the sales floor, in walk-in freezers and coolers, in receiving and storage areas, and in the parking lot. The work may involve temperatures of approximately 40-50°F, frozen or packaged raw meat, cleaning products, wet or slippery surfaces, moving equipment, vehicle traffic, noise, and frequent interaction with customers and coworkers.
Minimum Qualifications
- At least 18 years of age.
- Eligible to work in the United States.
- No criminal background.
- Ability to provide friendly, courteous, and prompt customer service.
- Ability to read, write, perform basic math, follow instructions, and follow safety procedures.
- Ability to safely and repeatedly handle merchandise weighing up to 70 pounds throughout most of the assigned shift, with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Willingness and ability to perform continuous physically demanding work in warehouse, freezer, storage, receiving, and sales-floor environments involving merchandise up to 70 pounds.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
1. Food Safety, Sanitation, and Personal Hygiene
- Wear clean gloves whenever required for the assigned task and replace them when they become torn, dirty, or contaminated.
- Wear the company-issued cap and apron as required and keep them clean and in good condition.
- Follow all food-safety, sanitation, handwashing, cross-contamination-prevention, and approved-cleaning procedures.
- Keep work areas, tools, carts, baskets, towels, and supplies clean and stored in their designated locations.
2. Professionalism and Attendance
- Report to work on time, in required attire, and ready to begin work at the scheduled start of the shift.
- Notify the Floor Manager or Store General Manager as soon as possible if you expect to be late or unable to report to work as scheduled.
- Return on time from scheduled breaks and follow the approved break schedule.
- Maintain a professional and respectful attitude with customers, coworkers, vendors, and supervisors.
3. Receiving and Unpacking Deliveries
- Assist with unloading, unpacking, counting, and organizing inventory deliveries.
- Place products promptly in the correct freezer, cooler, storage, or floor location.
- Follow FIFO (First In, First Out) inventory rotation at all times and separate new inventory from older inventory when needed.
- Break down boxes and place cardboard and other waste in designated recycling or disposal areas.
- Report shortages, damaged products, unsafe conditions, or delivery concerns to the Floor Manager promptly.
4. Walk-In Freezers
- Keep assigned walk-in freezers clean, organized, safely arranged, and properly stocked.
- Keep freezer doors fully closed except while actively entering, exiting, or stocking.
- Monitor freezer temperatures, air leaks, water leaks, ice buildup, and equipment condition and complete required daily temperature logs.
- Report mechanical problems, temperature concerns, unsafe stacking, spills, damaged products, or signs of rodents immediately.
- Maintain proper inventory rotation and send required freezer inventory counts to management by the assigned time.
5. Floor Freezers
- Keep floor freezers fully stocked, clean, organized, powered on, and operating within the approved temperature range.
- Before placing inventory in the floor freezers, ensure that each item is individually bagged and labeled according to the store's approved process.
- Confirm that products are placed with the correct posted pricing and signage.
- Clean freezers with approved cleaning solutions and clean towels and prevent excessive ice or frost buildup.
- Promptly return or restock refrigerated or frozen items that customers decide not to purchase.
- Notify the Floor Manager immediately of temperature issues, leaks, damaged products, unsafe conditions, or signs of rodents.
6. Coolers
- Keep coolers clean, properly stocked, organized, and within the approved temperature range.
- Stock the chicken cooler with small and large chickens, drumsticks, leg quarters, wings, and other assigned products.
- Stock the gizzard cooler with chicken gizzards, chicken breast, chicken feet, and other assigned products.
- Keep the inside and outside of coolers free of blood spots, spills, residue, and debris.
- Complete required cooler temperature logs and report temperature, sanitation, product-quality, or equipment concerns promptly.
7. Customer and Store Support
- Assist customers courteously and contact the Floor Manager when additional help is needed.
- Assist grocery staff and other coworkers with safe lifting and movement of heavy or bulky items.
- Continuously retrieve shopping carts from the store and parking lot and return them to designated stations.
- Bring meat boxes to customers and meat cutters as requested and place them only in approved locations.
- Restock store supplies, including bags and gloves, and notify the supervisor when supply levels are low.
End-of-Shift and Closing Responsibilities
At the End of Every Shift
- Complete all assigned closing, cleanup, stocking, and checklist tasks before leaving.
- Bring meat baskets and shopping-cart bins to the cutting area and wash or sanitize them as directed.
- Leave freezers, coolers, carts, supplies, and work areas clean, stocked, organized, and safe.
- Bring shopping carts inside to the designated secure location.
- Confirm that the grocery door and sliding doors are locked when assigned to closing duties.
- Report incomplete work, temperature concerns, equipment problems, spills, pests, damage, or security issues to the closing manager before leaving.
Physical Requirements and Safe Work Practices
- The position requires prolonged standing and walking; frequent bending, reaching, pushing, pulling, and repetitive movement; and regular work in refrigerated areas.
- The position requires lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling items weighing up to 70 pounds. Use safe lifting techniques and request assistance or approved equipment when needed.
- Use caution around wet or slippery floors, freezer and cooler doors, stacked inventory, carts, loading areas, and parking-lot traffic.
- Wear required personal protective equipment and follow all food-safety, sanitation, lifting, equipment, and emergency procedures.
- Do not perform a task that appears unsafe. Stop, protect the area when possible, and notify the Floor Manager or Store General Manager.

Performance Standards and Recordkeeping
- Maintain dependable attendance, professional service, safe work practices, proper stocking and rotation, cleanliness, and accurate completion of assigned duties.
- Complete temperature logs, inventory counts, closing checklists, and other assigned records accurately, completely, and on time.
- Report product-quality, sanitation, temperature, equipment, pest, spill, injury, customer, and security concerns promptly.
- Employees must accurately complete required training and assigned checklists. Management may use training records, logs, checklists, incident reports, and other records when evaluating performance.
Other Duties
Perform other lawful and reasonable duties assigned by the Floor Manager, Store General Manager, designated owner, or another authorized manager. This job description describes the position's principal responsibilities but is not an exhaustive list of every task that may be required.
